ASUU Declares UNILORIN Terrorist Organisation

UNILORIN Terrorist Organisation – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), as a terrorist organisation over the purported sack of its branch chairman, Dr Kayode Afolayan for blowing the  whistle over alleged corrupt activities of the outgoing vice chancellor of the institution, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali.

It was reported that the Governing Council of the University of Ilorin dismissed one of its staff, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-UNILORIN branch), Dr Kayode Afolayan for his its support to see corruption end in this country.

According to a letter signed by the University Registrar, E.D Obafemi, titled Termination of appointment, the governing council held a meeting in which the disciplinary committee decided to sack the lecturer, Dr Afolayan. The statement reads;

The Council at its 155th meeting held on Monday 28th August 2017 considered the report from the 41st meeting of staff disciplinary committee held on Wednesday 7th June 2017 and Thursday 8th June 2017 approved that your services are no longer required. Consequently it directed that you should be relieved of your appointment. Accordingly your appointment is hereby terminated with effect from the date of this letter.

ASUU in a statement signed by Dr. Ade Adejumo,  its zonal coordinator for Ibadan, and Dr. Deji Omole, chairman of the University of Ibadan branch, noted that suppressing genuine whistle blowers who provided evidences through threat of sack is against the avowed commitment of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to fighting corruption.

ASUU therefore called on President Buhari to show genuine interest in the corruption going on at the University of Ilorin and victimisation of citizens committed to fighting corruption.

According to the statement, the union has written several petitions to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu,  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since 2016 concerning the situation but no action has been taken to resolve the matter. ”This has emboldened UNILORIN to embark on the victimization of the whistle blowers in the University”, the statement read.

The union also warned the university management reminding them of the crisis that happened in 2001 when 49 academic staff were fired.
