The 12th Governing Council of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has pledged a continuous synergy and support for the traditional stool of the Obong of Calabar.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the UNICAL Governing Council, Senator Nkechi Justina Nwaogu made the pledge when she led other members of council on a courtesy call on the Obong of Calabar, His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu (IV) in his palace.

Senator Nkechi who appreciated the Obong of Calabar for the warm reception said the governing council had come to seek his fatherly advice and blessings which would be of utmost benefit to the institution.

The Pro-Chancellor said due to the strategic and pivotal role played by traditional rulers in the country, the governing council deemed it fit to pay him a visit in order to rub minds and synergize on how to move UNICAL forward.

She said, ‘’ As a traditional woman from Abia State I know what culture entails and that is why as a council we have come to pledge our loyalty and support.

‘’ We are here to take your advice and blessings and to tell you that the institution is here for you’’

Senator Nkechi also promised to maintain the cordial relationship existing between the palace of the Obong of Calabar and the institution.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu thanked the Obong of Calabar for receiving the governing Council with open arms and promised to serve the immediate surrounding communities in all aspects.

He also promised to implement the Memorandum of Understanding between the Obong of Calabar and the institution and wished him long reign on the throne.

The Vice Chancellor also used the opportunity to congratulate the Obong of Calabar for his recognition and appointment as Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
Responding, the Obong of Calabar and Grand Patriarch of Efik Kingdom, His Eminence Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu (IV) said UNICAL is very dear to him, adding that he holds the institution in high esteem.

He said he was particularly happy that an alumnus of the institution is now at the helms of affairs of the institution and called on everyone to give him the necessary support to enable him succeed.

The Monarch charged the Pro-Chancellor to work in unison with the Vice Chancellor in order to propel the institution to greater heights.

The Obong of Calabar further called on the governing council to ensure that the newly established faculty of engineering and Pharmacy functions at full capacity, adding that, ‘’ if UNICAL works it is our glory’’.
